The first Volkswagen Beetle went into production 75 years ago. With its rounded, hunched frame, air-cooled rear engine, spartan interior and vertical windscreen, little changed until the last classic bug rolled off a Mexican assembly line in 2003. In that time, more than 21 million Beetles were sold. And now, in 2018, there’s sad news for the classic car. Its more modern incarnation has seen falling sales around the world, and Volkswagen has made the decision to cease production in 2019. Happily, the company is not ruling out one day reviving such an instantly recognisable brand, maybe as a hybrid or electric version. “I would say never say never,” says Hinrich Woebcken, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America.
